Aloalo is the Hawaiian name for native Hawaiian hibiscuses. Seven species are endemic to Hawaii; Mao hao hele, an endangered yellow hibiscus, is well- loved as Hawaii’s state flower and can be found in local yards and gardens. This series of goache paintings are inspired by these unique blooms, a loving reminder of the fleeting beauty of nature and flowers’ mana (life energy).
