The New Year's ritual of mochitsuki (Japanese rice cake making) embodies in poetic verse and image the deeper spiritual meaning of the communal, creative manifestation of the Divine in the Konko religion. Konko, a modern sect of Shinto, teaches the "the infinite love of the Principle Parent of the Universe which embraces all living things." The Japanese expression "mochitsu motaretsu" describes a situation in which two or more people help each other, reciprocal support that they receive and give.
